First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) and Intermolecular, Inc. recently announced a collaboration and licensing agreement with the goal of making First Solar’s cadium-telluride (CdTe) PV technology more efficient. First Solar is the world’s largest thin-film PV solar manufacturer.

This new agreement will enable First Solar to leverage Intermolecular’s High Productivity Combinatorial (HPC) platform in the development of its CdTe-based PV technology. All of the technical work is set to be conducted at Intermolecular’s San Jose, California laboratories.

“We are excited to engage in this ongoing collaboration with Intermolecular…Further improving our world-record CdTe conversion efficiencies remains a strong lever to reduce cost of solar energy. We evaluated Intermolecular’s HPC platform and technical team in a trial collaboration, and this experience confirmed the suitability of the platform for our purposes,” First Solar’s Chief Technology Officer Raffi Garabedian explained.

Earlier this year, First Solar set the world record for CdTe PV solar module efficiency, attaining 14.4% total area efficiency. Last July, First Solar also set a record for CdTe PV cell efficiency at 17.3%. The US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab confirmed both of these feats were indeed world records.
