Denmark's DONG Energy has announced its bid to build one of the world's biggest offshore wind farms.
The 400-megawatt farm is expected to cost $1.8 billion.
The wind farm, located off the Danish island of Anholt, would supply its first power in 2012 and be completed in 2013.
Currently, the worlds biggest offshore wind farm is DONG's 209 MW Horns Rev 2 in the North Sea.
DONG's new wind farm would supply enough CO2-free electricity for 400,000 Danish households - 4 percent of Denmark's total power consumption.
If the concession is awarded to DONG, the total investment is expected to represent up to 10 billion Danish crowns.
Denmark obtains approximately a fifth of its electricity production from wind farms on and offshore, making it a world leader in wind energy.
DONG plans to shift over the next 30 years from generating 85 percent of its heat and power with fossil fuels and 15 percent with renewables, to 85 percent from renewables and 15 percent from fossil fuels.
The new project fits well with this goal.
Until Next Time,
Hilary
