All right folks, green freak or not, I’ve got some great news for EV enthusiasts and investors alike, so brace yourself.
Yesterday morning when I walked into our Baltimore office I heard Jeff Siegel break his no nonsense façade with a giddy yell from the second floor . . .
“Field! Did you hear the news?”
I could tell he was excited, so I felt obligated to mess with him . . .
“What? They’re making hemp underpants in your size now?”
“NO, smart guy! Two of your favorite companies, UQM and Altairnano, have formed a partnership!”
I was floored!
Anytime two powerhouse companies like these tie on the ol’ ball and chain, some monumental profits and technological advances are in order.
You see, UQM (UQM:AMEX) is a flagship in the motor world. They are leaps and bounds ahead of other motor manufacturers out there because they can mass produce high-performance motors that provide tire-shredding power in a lightweight, small package.
Altairnano’s technology (ALTI:NASDAQ) is on the same level as UQM’s, just on another playing field. Their specialty is combining their expertise in nanotechnologies with battery packs. The end result is light, small, safe, lithium-ion batteries that have the competitors whipped.
And just like any “match made in heaven” story, the first meeting of these two beauties took place in an unlikely setting.
A full-sized truck . . . go figure.
Anyways, Phoenix Motorcars recruited these two companies to work on their Sport Utility Truck. The UQM motor powers this vehicle to a governed 100 mph top speed and can get it to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds. The Altairnano batteries can be recharged in 10 minutes and can “feed the beast” for 130 miles.
Realizing they’re as good together as cookies and milk, Phoenix Motorcars has put in a $9.5 million order to UQM and is projecting an order valued between $16 and $42 million for Altairnano in 2007.
With market analysts, major auto manufacturers and now even President Bush all realizing electric vehicles will be the future, there’s a heck of a lot of potential out there for these two small companies.
Later this month, Jeff and I will be telling you much more about these two companies . . . as well as a few more opportunities in the alternative energy and electric vehicle market.
Until then, “Keep your eyes on the road and your hands up on the wheel.”
