In 1960, under president Dwight Eisenhower, Interior Secretary Fred Seaton created the Arctic Wildlife Range on roughly 9 million acres in northeast Alaska.
Today, that area is known as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Some recognize it as the “Last Wilderness” where unique wildlife is preserved and fresh water supplies remain secure.
Sadly, others see it as one more place to exploit so oil companies can get rich, politicians can get fat campaign contributions and fake conservatives can claim victory over make-believe socialists and blasphemers.
“But ANWR represents a huge, secure domestic supply that could help satisfy U.S. demand for more than 25 years.”
Oh Sarah Palin, you're such a good parrot, squawking the misinformation you've been fed about ANWR. Nevermind the fact that USGS estimates show ANWR can probably only produce around 750,000 barrels per day at peak. And it could take between 10 to 20 years to get to that level.
Well shit, in 20 years I'll be able to get an electric car with a 500-mile range! And as far as price, the DOE has said that drilling in ANWR would only reduce gasoline prices by less than four cents per gallon – in 20 freaking years!
But none of that matters, because oil interests have plenty of cash to burn in order to get their distorted message out to the masses of drooling Tea Party knuckle-draggers and those incredibly hot “news” anchors that Fox hires to hypnotize viewers so they stick around until 5:00 to catch their star terrorist of untruth, Glenn Beck.
And these foolish puppets will do it all just to prove their conservative street cred. Yet I bet none of them will ever acknowledge these words of one of the greatest conservatives of the 20th century – Dwight Eisenhower:
“As we peer into society's future, we – you and I, and our government – must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without asking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage.”
Then again, those words were spoken at a time when Americans believed in progress and creating opportunities for future generations of Americans. But today, while the rest of the world prepares for a post peak world – we're reporting on Sarah Palin's cryptic tweets and arguing over who should and shouldn't have been kicked off Dancing With The Stars.
Yeah, that's right!
