I've never really been a big “car” guy.
I mean, growing up, I could always appreciate the sleek curves of what Detroit churned out back in its heyday. And certainly there's something to be said for getting behind the wheel of a machine that can launch you from 0 to 60 in just a few seconds.
But at the end of the day, I've really only looked at cars as a form of transportation. Just get me from point A to point B without any hassle, and I'm satisfied.
Of course, with the introduction of electric vehicles, my thoughts on cars have changed quite a bit. Today I find myself fascinated by new battery chemistries. I get excited when I read about a new electric car that'll give me 300 miles on a single charge, or research that suggests in a few more years, we'll have access to electric cars delivering all-electric ranges of more than 500 miles.
I'm intrigued by the mechanics of it all. And certainly the idea of displacing all that foreign oil is a big deal to me, and pretty much anyone who considers himself a patriotic American.
So it's with great enthusiasm that I read about the development of electric vehicles. I've even started reading all those car magazines, since most now offer coverage on electric cars and trucks.
Now you may recall last week when Automobile Magazine and Motor Trend announced that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt was their choice for car of the year. Both articles were top notch and offered some of the most objective coverage we've seen yet in this sector.
I'm sure the folks over at GM were pleased, and electric car enthusiasts were quick to share the news.
But, to little surprise, it didn't take long for the bully blowhards to get a hold of this story and spin it into something completely ridiculous. I'm talking about Rush Limbaugh, of course, and his moronic questioning of Motor Trend's credibility after choosing the Volt as its Car of the Year.
Now I don't typically respond to the empty rhetoric of media buffoons, since their intentions are more about ratings than providing honest and thoughtful commentary. And thankfully, I don't have to. Because Motor Trend reporter Todd Lassa took care of this one.
And his response to Limbaugh was so appropriate and so valid, that I had to share it with you.
