A New 600 MW Wind Farm In Romania

By Jeff Siegel
Monday, September 7th, 2009

General Electric has just landed a turbine deal with Czech energy group, CEZ. The turbines will be used for a $1.6 billion, 600 megawatt wind farm project in Romania.

With about half of the wind farm expected to come online in 2010, this particular wind farm is likely to be the largest onshore wind project in Europe.

Romania currently has 628 megawatts of installed wind capacity.

Also in wind energy news today, Ramco Energy has announced that it now plans to sell off its oil and gas interests while focusing exclusively on its offshore wind operations. Ramco representatives said that the company has decided to move toward renewables due to a reluctance from cleantech investment funds to invest in the group with its oil and gas focus.

Here's what executive chairman, Stephen Remp had to say about the news. . .

"The offshore wind opportunity is truly enormous, with over 130 billion pounds ($213.1 billion) of investment envisaged over the next 11 years through the Scottish and UK Offshore Rounds."

Editor's Note: From solar and wind to geothermal and biofuels, Green Chip readers want to know which renewable energy resource will take over where fossil fuels leave off. The answer is...all of the above!

There is no one single solution to today's energy crisis. However, the combination of all viable renewable energy resources, coupled with energy efficiency, conservation and smart grid development will not only lead us to energy independence and a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure — but also to what will soon prove to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st Century.
