Our World Taken for Granted

Our extraordinary planet that we claim as our home was born billions of years ago. Ever since humans were created we have done nothing but use and abuse the planet's natural resources. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, society has done even more harm by damaging the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels and using machines that release pollutants into the air. Does society have any sympathy to the planet that has offered so much, not only housing, but also supplying food and energy to all six billion of us? Finally, scientists and entrepreneurs have come together to create natural ways to produce energy, such as, wind turbines and solar panels.

Wind turbines in California have made a significant difference in the world. Wind turbines in California generally produce over one percent of the state's electricity. That's 4,258 million kilowatts of energy produced by wind! Most of California's wind turbines are located in the Altamont Pass, Tehachapi and San Gorgonio Area. These three areas accumulated about thirty percent of the world's wind produced electricity over ten years ago. Energy producing wind turbines have not only influenced and assisted in the help of restoring our planet, but it has also provided jobs indirectly and directly for many California and Non-California residents. Wind turbines have produced billions of dollars to private investors in the past decade. Smaller wind turbines can be purchased for homes, farms, and businesses in windy locations. In order to purchase a wind turbine there are permitting issues and fees to be dealt with. Wind turbines can cost anywhere from tens of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars. It depends on if your purchasing a wind turbines for your own personal use, or for commercial use. Of course you can be a "do it yourselfer" and build your own wind turbine for only hundreds of dollars.

Arizona is one of the top states in the country that uses the most solar power and gets the best result. Beautiful sunny Arizona only gets a handful of days out of the year that are not sunny. There are organizations dedicated to the success and spreading the knowledge of renewable energy. In Arizona, there are several organizations dedicated to spreading the knowledge of the use solar energy. Solar panel costs vary depending on the amount of watts. You can buy a good high-performance solar panel for fewer than one thousand dollars, and be pleased with the effects and the savings in your bank account.

Renewable energy has become somewhat of a necessity for us, as a human race. We have the option to take a stand and buy solar panels or wind turbines to let mother nature create our energy. Or we can continue to pay electric companies each month for energy that the sun and wind provides for us. It's more affordable and economical, and a good way to take advantage of the hot summers and windy days. Even though in the beginning of switching over to renewable energy, the costs will be somewhat great, but in the end the effect will be even more great. You'll be saving the Earth for a few more years for our descendents to enjoy, and live a long happy life. If we all join together and switch over to renewable energy and alternative fuel methods for our vehicles, we can all make a significant change in the pollution and the regression of our planet. In the end, we all need to do what's right. We need to save our planet, our home. Not only for us, but for the future residents of our beautiful habitat.

Editor's Note: From solar and wind to geothermal and biofuels, Green Chip readers want to know which renewable energy resource will take over where fossil fuels leave off. The answer is...all of the above!

There is no one single solution to today's energy crisis. However, the combination of all viable renewable energy resources, coupled with energy efficiency, conservation and smart grid development will not only lead us to energy independence and a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure — but also to what will soon prove to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st Century.
