So the summer begins in just two days - but I've been ready for summer vacation since about mid-April.
I think it's the dreary, rainy weather that usually kicks in around that time, here in Baltimore. Though the way it's been raining lately, you'd think it was still the rainy season.
Of course, I can't complain too much. There's little chance of a drought this year. And our rain barrel is almost completely filled. Certainly this will come in handy for watering our garden. I tell ya, there's nothing better than growing your own organic vegetables. And I can assure you...there's no price premium for us. But even with price premiums, most organic consumers will continue to shell out a few more bucks to get the good stuff. Even in tough economic times.
According to a new Organic Trade Association study, organic consumers in the U.S. are not giving up their organic purchases, despite the current economic environment. Here are some of the numbers...
17 percent of U.S. families said their largest increases in spending in the past year were for organic products.
Three in 10 U.S. families (31 percent) are buying more organic foods than compared to a year ago.
73 percent of U.S. families buy organic products at least occasionally, primarily for health reasons.
Whatever your reason, the organic movement is not being derailed by the recession. And I don't believe for a minute that this will change. Most organic consumers look at organic food, not as a luxury, but rather as a normal expense for groceries. Some may not understand this...but you'll be hard-pressed to find an organic consumer that would disagree with this statement.
You can read more about this study in this week's Green Chip Living, here.
There's also a very interesting, and somewhat comical article this week about Michelle Obama's organic garden. It seems some companies that peddle pesticides and synthetic fertilizers aren't happy with the First Lady's project that was really intended to highlight the importance of healthy diets for children. How dare she!
Oh, and definitely check out what Tesla Motors' CEO had to say about the true cost of gas. He's saying it should be about $10 per gallon. I suspect it's more. But Elon Musk makes a very compelling argument.
All of this can be found at Green Chip Living.
Have a great weekend!
Jeff
