Last week, Dong Energy, E.ON and Masdar announced a $3 billion investment for the first 630 megawatt phase of a 1 GW offshore wind farm in the Thames Estuary. When completed, it will be the world's largest offshore wind farm, boasting enough power for 750,000 homes. That's about a quarter of all the homes in Greater London.
Well, it didn't take long for the first contract announcement on this one.
Siemens announced yesterday that it will provide 175 wind turbines for the project. The turbines are expected to be shipped in 2011.
Meanwhile, Europe's largest onshore wind farm went live today in Scotland.
ScottishPower's 140 turbines in East Renfrewshire are expected to generate enough power for 180,000 homes. And after Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond flipped the switch, he announced that ScottishPower had also just received approval to add another 36 turbines to the site. With those in place, the wind farm would reach a total capacity of 452 megawatts - or enough to power 250,000 homes.
ScottishPower is the third largest electricity distributor and the largest wind producer in the UK. It was acquired by Iberdrola, SA in 2006.
