Last year, we announced our first-ever Green Chip Stocks scholarship.

This was a $1,000 scholarship for the student who wrote the most compelling argument supporting the economic superiority of renewable energy.

After receiving more than 100 entries, we chose Arizona State University freshman, Christos Makridis.

Last month, I visited Christos while on a trip to Phoenix, and had the opportunity to speak with this budding capitalist at a local Greek restaurant that just so happens to be owned by his parents. Here's a picture of us out front. . .

By the way, if you're ever in Phoenix, definitely check out Greekfest. The Youvetsi is beyond delicious, and the baklava will blow your mind. His mother makes it from scratch!

Christos and I sat for a few hours and discussed everything from the free market (or illusion of a free market when it comes to energy) to sustainability to the responsible business practices that embrace the triple bottom line. And I have to say, I was truly impressed.

Beyond Christos' submission, it was clear to me that this guy actually "gets it." He walks the walk, and I have little doubt that he will be very successful in whichever career path he decides to follow.

Editor's Note: From solar and wind to geothermal and biofuels, Green Chip readers want to know which renewable energy resource will take over where fossil fuels leave off. The answer is...all of the above!

There is no one single solution to today's energy crisis. However, the combination of all viable renewable energy resources, coupled with energy efficiency, conservation and smart grid development will not only lead us to energy independence and a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure — but also to what will soon prove to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st Century.
