Energy Reform

Energy is the vital force powering businesses manufacturing, and the transportation of goods and services to serve American and world economies. The increase of supply and demand for energy has played a major role on our national security and our overall economic output of our nation. The United States spends over $500 billion annually on energy, and while the Americans demand for energy increases, the department of energy is facing these challenges by establishing clean fuel initiatives to make most of our traditional fossil fuels. The relationship between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia has been made into a cohabitant one while working off of each other early in 2000. Their relationship was based solely on Americans needs for energy fuels, and Saudi Arabia's desire to better improve their country. Our ties with that country have been distraught due to an increase in their military, and the event that occurred September 11th tragedy. Saudi Arabia has invested $70 million globally, 60% of which was invested in U.S. Americans demand for Saudi Arabia's oil (whitehouse.gov/issues) this continues to increase at $1.5 million barrels per day. The international energy agency predicts that coal will increase it's share of global energy demand from it's current twenty five percent to twenty eight percent. In 2003 the Bush administration announced the hydrogen fuel initiative. The cost for this five year plan to accelerate hydrogen related research would have cost the U.S. $1.2 billion. The Bush administration was planning to push for more clean skies cleaner air, but this project has been considered, not followed through with. Although the overall quality of our air has improved we continue to face major difficulties. Within the last twenty years the air has improved significantly. Together we must decrease the airborne pollutants being emitted from the nation's power plants and factories especially these that are being fueled. The office of policy and international affairs is becoming more aware of the climate changes we are facing.

The overall Obama/Biden energy reform plan goes as follows; we plan to provide short term relief to American families facing difficulties with gas at the pump. This will help create 5million new jobs by strategic investing $150 billion over the next ten years we plan to save more oil than we currently import from Middle East and Venezuela combined and imported. There will be $1million plug in hybrid cars that will reach 150 miles per gallon. By 2015 all cars will be American made. Eventually this will ensure ten percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012 and twenty five percent by 2025 and implement the economy wide gap and trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions form eighty percent by 2050 (obama/biden). Most importantly this will provide short term relief to American families.

Coal is the world's number one source for electricity; unfortunately it is also the number one energy source to release carbon dioxide emissions. (energy.gov) both central; and eastern European countries continue to rely on coal and although coal is the dirtiest of all energy sources. We will continue to use coal and the International Energy Agency predicts that coal will increase it's share of global demand form it's current 25 percent to 28 percent. As a developed country we have advances in research and are looking to find more efficient productive sources to fuel our economy. Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier (like electricity) made from a diverse domestic resource, renewable energy. Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear energy and fossil energy. Hydrogen during long term use will simultaneously reduce dependence on foreign oils and emissions from greenhouse gasses and criteria pollutants.

Renewable energy sources including wind, solar, geothermal, hydrogen, and biomass all play an important role in the future of our development of renewable sources of energy. The department of Energy is working to instill that all new and upcoming car models will be cleaner and more efficient while the U.S. plans to strengthen its energy security and continue to improve its environment. Also the office of Energy Efficiency and renewable energy (EERE) focuses on a range of renewable energy sources partnering with other government entities.

Our solar program is working to educate the American people about the value of solar energy as a secure, reliable and clean energy choice. New developing technologies that take advantage of the clean abundant energy of the sun are important to reducing greenhouse gasses and helping stimulate our economy.

Over time the American people have managed to harness wind to be penetrated to deliver energy for centuries. Today wind generates electricity that powers millions of Americans homes and businesses. By taking advantage of this abundant domestic resource to generate electricity will soon meet the American's growing demands for energy significantly improve energy security, but most importantly protecting the environment. The Department of Energy's wind and hydropower Technologies program is working to improve wind technology to increase the use of wind. This new wind program is working to partner with the wind industry to develop clean, domestic, innovative wind based energy and technology that are cost competitive with fossil fuels. Recent issues surrounding trading commission regulations have had a major affect on the high prices of oil in world markets. The Obama Biden energy reform plan will secure any issues that could further increase oil prices, and will prevent traders from taking advantage of Americans money. The unfortunate changes in our climate are causing polar ice caps to melt at a rapid pace. The shrinking ice caps are increasing sea levels. This domino effect has had a negative result across the globe. Tropical diseases are making there way north, while the rising sea levels are killing off polar bear species.

The American recovery and reinvestment act included more than $60 billion in clean energy investments that will jump start our economy and build the clean energy jobs for tomorrow.(energy.gov) Within the next four years $11 billion will go towards a bigger, better and smarter grid that will move renewable energy from the rural places it is produced to the cities where it is mostly used as well as for $40 million smart meters to be deployed in American homes $5 billion will go towards a low income home weatherization project, while $4.5 million go to green federal buildings and cut our energy bill, saving tax payers billions of dollars. (obama/biden) a memorandum to the department of Energy to implement more aggressive efficiency standards for more common household appliances such as dish washers refrigerators, and stoves. Through this newly thought out plan over the next three decades we're sure to save twice the amount of energy produced by all the coal fired power plants in America in any given year. We're also supporting the beginning process to legally binding a treaty to reduce mercury emissions world wide. Just this past month my cabinet and myself have announced a new program to develop the renewable energy projects located on the waters of our outer continental shelf. These of which will produce electricity with wind, wave, and ocean currents. These regulations, an American first, will enable the U.S. to tap into our oceans vast, and sustainable resources to generate clean energy in an environmentally sound and safe manner.
In order to help bring our economy into a more productive direction, together we need to work with congress to increase the passing of comprehensive legislation to protect our nation from solely relying on oil to be the nation's main fuel for our economy. And more importantly this will prevent our nation from falling back into the serious economic and strategic risks that are associated with relying on foreign oils and the destabilizing affects it has on our climate and environment.

In conclusion, Americans have a strong reliance on oil to fuel our economy. We have had strong ties with countries overseas to help provide us with the oil we need. Our previous administrations have led our country into serious risks with other countries and foreign oil. Most importantly our poor fuel preferences have had a bad impact on our climate, and environment, leading to oil leaks in the ocean and global warming. With the new Obama/ Biden administration we have several new ideas for saving our economy and practicing better energy reform. This will benefit the American people saving those billions. More jobs will be produced leaving relief for the American people.

Editor's Note: From solar and wind to geothermal and biofuels, Green Chip readers want to know which renewable energy resource will take over where fossil fuels leave off. The answer is...all of the above!

There is no one single solution to today's energy crisis. However, the combination of all viable renewable energy resources, coupled with energy efficiency, conservation and smart grid development will not only lead us to energy independence and a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure — but also to what will soon prove to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st Century.
