Cellulosic Ethanol

Who's Making Money in Ethanol?

By Jeff Siegel
Monday, October 15th, 2007

I got a few e-mails this afternoon about Abengoa's announcement that it had produced ethanol from biomass at its pilot plant in Nebraska.

Folks wanted to know if there was a way to play this, since the stock did pop about 3% on the news.

Well first off, let me just say that Abengoa does not trade domestically, except on the pink sheets. And we typically stay away from those.

Though I should also mention that in a few weeks, Sam Hopkins, our international correspondent, is going to show Green Chip members how to profit from alternative energy companies trading outside of the U.S. and Canada.

However, there was another way to play this news for those who only invest domestically.

But it was in 2006.

You see, last year I alerted our members when a company called SunOpta (STKL:NASDAQ) announced that it had shipped a pretreatment system for Abengoa's Bioenergy Research and Development pilot plant.

SunOpta, while known primarily as an organic and natural foods company, also operates a Bioprocess group that converts cellulosic raw materials into value-added products...including cellulosic ethanol.

Now when this announcement was made last year, the company's stock was trading around $5.30 a share.

Last week it hit a new high of $15.50.

Take a look...

That's a gain of nearly 200%!

Of course, my point here is not to chest-pound about past opportunities. Instead, I just want to call your attention to the opportunities that exist for those who stay on top of the alternative energy market.

The biggest money is almost always made by those who are constantly aware of ALL the players. Not just the big dogs.

It's one thing to know that Abengoa is the largest ethanol producer in Europe, and the second largest in the world. It's another to know that a little $5.30 Canadian company is providing this behemoth with its pretreatment system.

The devil's in the details, my friends.

And the profits belong to Green Chip.

Until next time...
