Is It Possible To Be Car-Free In LA?

As you can probably guess, I'm on pretty much every "green" e-mail list out there. From policy alerts to market analysis to lifestyle sites and blogs - if it's green, I probably read it.

On Monday, I got an update from the Green LA Girl blog. I actually came across this blog after reading a review of the Marrakesh Open House. This is the open house I attended a few weeks ago while on a research trip out west. Yes, I realize I'm not a girl and I don't live in LA. But an interesting read is an interesting read. And that's why I'm telling you about this one today.

You see, this particular blog is running a feature called "Car-Free Mondays." I suspect the idea is to let folks in LA know that there are alternatives to the sky-high insurance rates, insane traffic and loads of pollution associated with car-dependence.

Of course, I'm well aware that LA is a very car-centric society. But I've had the opportunity to take the bus in LA on a number of occasions...and it was an absolute pleasure. In fact, the Big Blue Bus in Santa Monica delivered me to a number of conferences, and a "green" investment club meeting where those in attendance couldn't believe I didn't have a rental car. The funny thing was that while I was dolling out data on fossil fuel depletion and renewable energy growth estimates, quite a few seemed more interested in getting a copy of my bus schedule that I printed out from my office in Baltimore.

But I'm getting off base here.

The point is, whether its LA or Charm City, taking the bus can be a great way to save money, avoid rush-hour traffic, and displace a little foreign oil. Not a bad deal when you really think about it. And that's why I found this "Car-Free Monday" feature so interesting. Because it presents bus-riding in a realistic, and pretty positive light. And I believe it does it in an honest way...peppered with a bit of light humor, so you don't feel like you're being lectured.

You can find the full post here.

Editor's Note: From solar and wind to geothermal and biofuels, Green Chip readers want to know which renewable energy resource will take over where fossil fuels leave off. The answer is...all of the above!

There is no one single solution to today's energy crisis. However, the combination of all viable renewable energy resources, coupled with energy efficiency, conservation and smart grid development will not only lead us to energy independence and a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure — but also to what will soon prove to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st Century.
