Last year, I told you about some of the pros and cons of Bulgaria's renewable energy agenda.

Since government incentives kicked in over there, new wind, solar and biomass projects have totalled more than 11,000 megawatts. This is huge!

Well today, the Bulgarian government announced that it is proposing a ban on building solar and wind farms on quality arable land. Definitely a smart decision on the part of Bulgaria.

Certainly the expansion of renewable energy operations is integral to the long-term economic growth of the Balkan country. But doing so in an irresponsible manner only allows you to trade one problem for another.

Sure, you could cover all your arable land with wind turbines and solar fields, but where are you going to grow your food?!!

It is entirely possible to balance environmental protection and economic development. And the Bulgarian government is wise to tackle this issue before it gets out of hand. Because there is no doubt that the renewable energy industry is soaring there.

Last year, the share of renewable energy in Bulgaria hit 9.9 percent. The goal is to get to 16 to 20 percent by 2020.

Editor's Note: From solar and wind to geothermal and biofuels, Green Chip readers want to know which renewable energy resource will take over where fossil fuels leave off. The answer is...all of the above!

There is no one single solution to today's energy crisis. However, the combination of all viable renewable energy resources, coupled with energy efficiency, conservation and smart grid development will not only lead us to energy independence and a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure — but also to what will soon prove to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st Century.
