When I think of the word arsenic, the first thing that comes to mind is some random chemical that I used in high school biology.
It may have been, but more commonly it's known for its presence in rat poison…
As well as your chicken.
A large outcry has come from the Maryland area to stop the use of arsenic in chicken feed.
The poison has been used since the 1940s to control a common intestinal disease in the chickens. But recently Food and Water Watch, a non-profit consumer advocacy group, has released a study showing the negative environmental and human health impacts caused by poisoned chicken.
The study showed that the consumption of arsenic, which was also found in wells of the Chesapeake area, leads to things such as cancer and diabetes -- two things that most people aren't ok with.
Hence the activist protests that have broken out -- leading to the adaptations taking place…
Two of the biggest names in the chicken industry, Perdue and Tyson, have already claimed they've completely stopped the usage of arsenic in chicken feed.
The only problem is finding an alternative way to avoid losing chickens to the intestinal disease.
Luckily for investors, the word alternative has recently been used a lot in the agricultural industry, and it ooks like the industry is in for a rapid transition.
Look for companies like these to take the lead in the new trends of greening and enhancing the sustainability of agriculture.
AgFeed Industries, Inc. (FEED): engages in the animal nutrition and commercial hog production businesses primarily in the People's Republic of China. It involves in the research and development, manufacture, marketing, distribution, and sale of pre-mix, concentrate, and complete feed for use in the domestic animal husbandry markets.
China Agritech Inc. (CAGC): manufactures and sells organic liquid compound fertilizers, organic granular compound fertilizers, and related agricultural products in the People’s Republic of China.
Converted Organics Inc. (COIN): manufactures all-natural fertilizer and soil amendment products combining disease suppression and nutrition characteristics from food waste and other raw materials.
China Green Agriculture, Inc. (CGA): engages in the research, development, manufacture, and distribution of humic acid based compound fertilizers in China. Humic acid is a natural, organic ingredient for a balanced, fertile soil, and the primary constituents of organic matter.
